The perfect little hub for many purposes
The Audioengine N22 is a standalone 22W per channel stereo amplifier.
A quick note about speakers. There are two types: active (powered) speakers, and passive (unpowered) speakers. An active speaker needs power from your wall socket (or runs on batteries) because it has a built-in power amplifier. Passive speakers need an external amplifier to amplify the low level (line level) signal from your iPod, computer soundcard, dvd player to a high level signal that is strong enough to move the cones of your speaker drivers to make sound. This amp is designed to be used with the second (passive) type of speakers
The N22 is designed as a multipurpose unit for a wide variety of scenarios:

This little amp is FANTASTIC. I started to know Audioengine when I got my A2s for my home's office. I was surprised! Later I got the P4s to pair them with my Fatman itube hybrid amp in my office. I was blown away again! Now that I needed a small amp to connect with my airport express I did not doubt it and got the N22. I knew I was going to get something good and I was not disappointed. Paired this guy with my Cambridge S20 and it makes these little speakers shine (I have to confess that this was hard), I can't imagine what this amp does with more responsive speakers. This amp is well rounded in sound an construction quality.
If you are looking for a small amp with audiophile quality, this is the one. Audioengine has designed another winner!!

I purchased the AudioEngine N22 on something of a lark. I received a free Polk subwoofer from Crutchfield when I had ordered some speakers. I didn't need an extra subwoofer, but it was calling out for use. I recently purchased a new iMac, and I had the subwoofer, and I had a couple of old Polk satellite speakers that I wasn't using. So, in a moment of extravagance I purchased the N22. I couldn't be happier.
The iMac has decent sound out of the box, but it sounds like a computer -- better than most, but the sound was shallow when listening to internet radio or streaming movies from Netflix. I now have the N22 connected to the computer and the speakers. I'm running the N22 through an HRT Music Streamer II + High Resolution USB D/A Converter. The result is magnificent.
