Sony STR-DA5300ES ES 7.1 Channel Surround Sound Audio/Video Receiver
The Sony- STR-DA5300ES 7.1 A/V receiver expands on its predecessor's DNA. Regardless of source, this receiver integrates the latest audio and video technologies while making operations simple and easy. This receiver provides an "Audio for Video" solution which integrates the latest technologies to optimize sound as well as picture quality. The STR-DA530ES utilizes Faroudja- DCDI Cinema Technology which up scales non-HD sources (VHS, DVD, etc ) to 1080p4. In addition to video upscaling, this chipset corrects image jaggedness and reduces block noise resulting in beautiful, smooth high definition images. As for audio, the STR-DA5300ES utilizes high grade components that provide effective heat dissipation, large amounts of power while maintaining precise sound quality. Sony's Xross Media Bar inspired GUI allows a user to utilize an icon driven menu system which provides easy access to the receiver's most complicated functions. Want HD in a 2nd room of your home The STR-DA5300ES is the first Sony receiver that will distribute high definition content in a 2nd room (or zone) of a home. The STR-DA5300ES 7.1 A/V receiver will accept 1080/60p and 24p HD video formats, x.v.Color (xvYCC) and Deep Color while providing ample HDMI connections (6 inputs). Sony's DIGITAL MEDIA PORT makes this model iPod- Ready (accessory sold separately) and features BRAVIA- Theatre Sync technology for "One-Touch Play." Don't worry, we haven't forgotten about audio; the receiver is also capable of reproducing the latest audio formats from Dolby Labs- (Dolby Digital +/Dolby TrueHD) and dts- (dts- High Resolution Audio and dts- HD Master Audio).
With so many on offer these days, it is great to have a name you can trust. This item is certainly that and will be a perfect buy. The distributor have added some great touches and this equals great value.

Overall very nice, a few issues
I bought the STR-DA5300ES to replace a Denon system in about the same price range that had no HDMI capability. I have a 1080p projection system which requires HDMI for 1080p (otherwise is limited to 1/2 resolution HD, technically known as 1080i) and so I'd been looking for a receiver with decent HDMI connectivity. With six inputs and one output, this receiver fit the bill, and it was 7.1 like the Denon, so I wouldn't have to make wiring changes to the speaker setup.

There's a great deal to like about this receiver, so I'm going to punt and simply say that the fidelity is great, the flexibility is quite high, and overall I feel that I got my money's worth, and then some. Make no mistake: This is a complex, feature-rich hunk of hardware that will take days of exploring before you're comfortable that you know exactly how it works and what options are available to you at any one point in its operation. Please do not take the lack of positive points here as a condemnation of the...

Very Good But Complex Setup Interface
I found the Sony 5300ES to be slightly more complicated to setup. When switching to a different manufacture you always expect some different nomenclatures/phrases for settings etc... though my learning curve with the 5300ES was a tad bit longer then usual. One has to understand of course this unit does offer a heck of a lot (functionally). That said, out of the box one can not expect to just plug in and guess their way through the GUI setup and "Auto" sound calibration... I had expected the auto calibration (using the stereo calibration mic) to recognize the speakers a little bit better. It mistook my side speakers as large when they are in-fact "small", though definitions can always be debated. The sub woofer was also set sub-par... It's just like anything that is "automatic setup" though, the system is really just guessing. So just make sure you go in and use the manual option to tweak things yourself.
Cons:
- Complex setup (which could be overcome with better GUI setup...
Great A/V Receiver
The Sony ES STR-DA5300ES does everything I need and want it to do. I love the GUI. It makes it easy for everyone especially novices using the receiver to find what they want to use. I found a great deal through Amazon and the company provided fast shipping. The receiver arrived in great condition. It took about 60 minutes to unhook everything from my old receiver and to hook it up to the Sony. The sound and picture is amazing. I highly recommend this A/V receiver.
