Pioneer vs Onkyo vs Denon
In the past year I've owned a Denon 2311CI, an Onkyo TX-NR809 and this Pioneer SC-61. Here are some comparisons.

Sound quality
1. Pioneer
2. Denon
3. Onkyo

The SC-61 sounds smooth and non fatiguing. It pairs really well with my Polk LSI system. The Denon sounded smooth as well, while the Onkyo was a little bright.

Loudness
1. Pioneer
2. Onkyo
3. Denon

The Pioneer is loud. Even though it has 125 W per channel vs the 135 W of the Onkyo, its class D3 amplification must be way more efficient because this receiver at -15 db sounds as loud as the Onkyo at reference (0 db), and way louder than the Denon.

Video quality
1. Pioneer and Onkyo
3. Denon

They all look good, but the Pioneer and Onkyo look better than the Denon.

Remote
1. Onkyo
2. Denon
3. Pioneer

The learning Onkyo remote is a pleasure to use with nice, soft buttons and four macro buttons on...

Quality product
I've previously owned a Pioneer amp and it is still running strong but a move to the USA meant a new amp and I had no hesitation in selecting another Pioneer. Its a sturdy machine, feels and looks solid. The connectivity is brilliant, I've hooked it into my wireless home network (using IOgear GWU627 rather than Pioneer wireless dongle) so I can stream netflix and internet radio stations very easily. Added the Pioneeer app to my ipad and phone to control the volume, select the inputs etc which works really well, means I can keep the amp behind closed doors which keeps the lady of the house happy! I'm driving a 5.1 system in the living room and stero zone 2 in the kitchen, more than enough power on tap to handle that. Sound is crisp and clean, every audio code you can think of. Also easy to set up with the supplied microphone and MDACC.
Best Reciever under $1000, but has a big drawback
Good:
Title says it all. Sounds great, runs cool, even has a great AM/FM tuner ("Who even mentions that?" Yes, it's that good) sooo many awesome features.

Bad:
Only bad thing is the use of all the inputs. I've been having trouble hooking up more than 1 analog (composite) audio or video source along with my 4 HDMI inputs and 1 optical audio input (TV audio out to receiver).

My Pioneer VSX-1019AH-K, I used to have, had no problems with this. It was as easy as hooking everything up and turning on the receiver. I consider myself to be very well versed when it comes to home theater installs, but this is just plain confusing. Even customer support doesn't know how to figure it out. I have an old N64 I want to hook up, as well as a AUX audio in... But nothing seems to let these things work without unplugging my Laserdisc/DVD/CD player and just using that input...

Overall: I rarely use those other two A/V sources, especially since I can just...
