Serious value at a surprising price
Warning, long review. TL;DR folks can stop right here: I liked it, lots of features, go ahead and buy.

No? Still here? Well, then:

Funny (short) story: I wasn't actually ready to step up to the AV7005, but our Denon receiver in the library was "gifted" with some cat vomit through the top cooling vents; I didn't know it had happened, because the back of the receiver was through-wall and sort of invisible inside a closet on the other side of that wall. So the Denon just kept on working until eventually, the acid in the vomit actually ate through some of its wiring. Nice, eh? Silly cat.

So the Denon went downstairs into my shop, where it will likely sit until the weather warms up (our basement is cold!) and I"m willing to sit there, rip it apart and fix it. My Sony 7.1 receiver then moved from our home theater to our library (and I built an anti-cat cover for the unit, there will be no more "vomit surprises"), and then I picked up the Marantz AV7005 and...

From Krell to Marantz
Update January 18, 2012
Wouldn't you know it, the moment I brag about no speaker dropout problems I get one that includes not just the front mains, but all of them. I was using a PS3 when I noticed a problem with games and Netflix; the only sound was coming from the subwoofer. I had recently played a 3D Blu-ray disc which worked perfectly so I was really surprised that I was having a problem. At first I suspected the PS3 but finally discovered the problem was with the Marantz again. The exception for the Blu-ray discs had thrown me off for a moment.

I tried the procedure described on page 115 of the manual but for some reason that didn't work this time. I checked all of the physical connections and they were all OK so I decided to start all over with the automatic speaker setup using the microphone. As soon as I started, the test tones came through normally from all my speakers; I went ahead and completed the process and by that time all speakers were functioning...
An analog perspective of this pre-pro
I've had the unit for a few weeks now, and after running a loop CD thru the 7.1 analog inputs for 50 hours or so, this component can truly be described as neutral. Thru it's pure direct mode, I simply can't ''tag'' a coloration of any form to the AV7005, and that's very good. Of course, it has all the bells and whistles of a modern pre-pro, but musicality is what I was also striving for, when I purchased it. Listening often to my SACD selections, I was really looking for a unit that could help pass the ''analog sound'' of my Mobile Fidelity recordings, and this unit hits a home run in this respect.

Of course you could get a dedicated stereo pre-amp that could be a little warmer in it's delivery, but if like me, you are looking for an all-inclusive unit to control your home-theater, as well as your music collection, I believe this one is unbeatable within it's price range.
