With so many on offer these days, it is great to have a name you can trust. This item is certainly that and will be a perfect buy. The distributor have added some great touches and this equals great value.

Decent alternative to tv speakers
If you can have one for the price I paid I believe it's a worthy replacement to stock flat panel speakers, and an acceptable alternative to true surround sound. I actually bought this at an online outlet site for a little over one bill $. I had not read any reviews online and this speaker system is pretty much non-existent for sale online so I was a little nervous after I had bought this. There are a few quirks that would put off most people from buying, such as a lack of HDMI, and the standard definition on screen setup required to see any changes of audio settings. The sound bar is very large, almost as wide as my 50 inch plasma, so that might be something to consider as well. The remote is a little confusing and attempts to integrate itself as a universal remote but fails as such. Don't pay more than $100
I bought this from the Altec Lansing website. It was clearanced/discontinued for $100 having had an original price of almost $600. I would say it's barely worth the $100 I paid. First off, this is not a 5.1 system. I guess it would be a 3.0 system. Most noticeably the subwoofer output is not a true low frequency (LFE) channel. It's called "enhanced bass" in the manual.
Beyond these deceptive marketing gimmicks, the couple other gripes I have about this system that would have made it more of a value is it doesn't have a radio tuner built in. Next is it only has indicator lights (no display) so at any distance it is very difficult to tell what input it is on. You also have to toggle through the inputs (twice since each input has analog and digital). This is what makes the indicator lights annoying. From sitting you toggle through the inputs yet can't see what you are on.
The other drawbacks are discussed by other reviewers so they don't need restating. All in all...

We have a 40" LCD flatscreen with decent speakers, and we love to watch movies...
Are you tired of saying, "What did he/she say?" and then pausing, rewinding, replaying 3 times to find out? We certainly were. Because if you turn up the sound on many TVs and older sound systems, the effects and soundtrack drown out the dialogue or center channel.
I think movies are EQ'd for 5.1 Dolby Digital Surround. Problem with that scenario is that those 5.1 systems are expensive, obtrusive, time-consuming to install, not to mention somewhat ugly.
So we took a chance and ordered the Altec Lansing PT7031. It's made our viewing/listening experience 100% better--and it looks sleek on top of the entertainment console (our widescreen is wall-mounted and we're debating about whether to use the wall mount bracket that came with the PT7031 or not).
